PhotocardLab Create a card

a small guide to getting the size right

Which photocard size should I print?

Photocards come in more than one size. Measure the card or sleeve you want to match before choosing a preset. Neither size is universal across albums, sleeves or manufacturers.

Two ready-to-print sizes

55 × 85 mm is our default. The slightly narrower and taller 54 × 86 mm preset is also available in every free template. The dimensions describe the finished outer card; the photo area inside a frame is smaller.

Choose Plain photo with Auto layout for a custom rectangle between 40 and 100 mm wide and between 40 and 160 mm high. Square cards and photo strips are also available. Framed templates keep their designed proportions and only support the two standard sizes.

Check the sleeve, not just its label

Measure the usable inside width and height of your sleeve. A card needs a little clearance to slide in; a sleeve labelled 55 × 85 mm may refer to its outside dimensions. Print one test card on inexpensive paper before using your final stock.

How many pixels do I need?

An edge-to-edge 55 × 85 mm card at 300 DPI needs about 650 × 1004 retained pixels. For 54 × 86 mm, aim for about 638 × 1016 pixels. Cropping and zooming reduce the pixels left in the visible area.

The editor estimates effective DPI from your original image at its displayed size. At 200–299 DPI it suggests a sharper original; below 200 DPI it asks you to acknowledge the low-resolution warning. A 300 DPI result only checks pixel resolution, not colour, printer alignment or paper quality. Adding more pixels to a small image cannot recover missing detail.

Keep faces and important details away from the cut

Home cutting and printers both introduce small shifts. Keep important details a few millimetres inside the finished edge. Optional crop marks show where to cut. In double-sided settings you can add up to 1 mm of bleed around each card; this cannot protect text placed directly on a shifted cut.

Download the separate calibration PDF, print at Actual size / 100%, and measure both 50 mm rulers before making your final cards.
